The DC MUZEN project demonstrates how a home can evolve from a passive electricity consumer into an intelligent energy cell within a future Second Grid ecosystem. By integrating local renewable generation, battery storage, DC distribution, flexible loads, and a controlled interface to the public grid, the system balances energy locally while maintaining comfort, resilience, and grid compatibility.
The purpose of this use case is to illustrate how a DC-based residential energy system can create value for multiple stakeholders simultaneously, including homeowners, energy communities, network operators, market participants, and society as a whole. Beyond reducing energy consumption and emissions, DC MUZEN explores new ways to improve grid stability, increase renewable energy utilisation, enable local energy sharing, strengthen cybersecurity, and support a fair and inclusive energy transition.
At a broader scale, the concept demonstrates how a network of self-balancing homes could form the foundation of a resilient, community-oriented energy system in which the traditional electricity grid and a complementary Second Grid work together to support electrification, sustainability, and long-term energy security.
