The Meaning of Muzen

The words museum, music, and amuse resemble each other for good reason. They are all derived from the Muses, goddesses of art and science. These nine goddesses symbolised inspiration and appear in various ancient myths.

Origin story

As with many myths, different origin stories exist about the Muses. At first, they were said to be not nine, but three goddesses: Melete (meditation), Mneme (memory), and Aoede (song).

However, the classical story of the Muses speaks of nine goddesses, first described as far as is known by the poet Hesiod (8th–7th century BC). These nine Muses were the daughters of the Greek supreme god Zeus and Mnemosyne, a female Titan and the personification of memory. They were said to have shared a bed for nine consecutive nights, after which the Muses were born. According to some myths, these goddesses lived on Mount Olympus, where they entertained their father and the other gods with music and knowledge. Apollo, the god of the sun, light, the (poetic) arts, and music, was closely connected with the Muses; they often performed together, and he fathered many children with the women.

Meaning of the Muses

Each Muse had her own specialisation within art and science. The most important of the nine was Calliope, who represented heroic epic poetry, philosophy, and rhetoric. Clio embodied historiography. Erato was the Muse of lyric poetry, Euterpe of flute playing, and Melpomene represented tragedy. Polyhymnia was the Muse of rhetoric and solemn sacred hymns, and was therefore often depicted with a contemplative expression. Terpsichore embodied dance and lyrical poetry and was popular among young people. Thalia was the Muse of comedy and festivity, and Urania was the Muse of astronomy. She sang of the deeds of the Olympian gods.

The Greek mountains were the most important places where the Muses were worshipped in antiquity, and temples and sanctuaries dedicated to them have been found there. Local worship of the Muses was also often associated with springs and fountains. The most important center of Muse worship was Boeotia, where the Valley of the Muses was located. This was also the birthplace of Hesiod, the first to write about the Muses.

Why the name fits so perfect

The name DC MUZEN (Dutch) or DC MUSES (English) is particularly appropriate because it combines the technical world of Direct Current (DC) with the broader concepts of inspiration, knowledge, art, science, creativity, and innovation represented by the Greek Muses.

In Greek mythology, the Muses were the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (Memory), and were regarded as the source of inspiration for artists, philosophers, scientists, historians, and inventors. They represent the human ability to transform knowledge into practical achievements. Throughout history, the Muses have symbolised the connection between learning, creativity, discovery, and progress.

This symbolism closely matches the goals of the DC MUZEN project. The house is not merely a building equipped with solar panels, batteries, heat pumps, electric mobility, and DC infrastructure. It functions as a living laboratory, where technology, science, engineering, sustainability, and everyday life come together. Like the Valley of the Muses in ancient Greece, 

DC MUZEN serves as a place where new ideas can be explored, 

demonstrated, and shared with others.

The name also has several meaningful associations:

• Museum originates from Mouseion, a place dedicated to the Muses and the pursuit of knowledge.
• Music derives directly from the Muses and their inspiration.
• Amuse literally means "to inspire" or "to delight through creativity."

Muze in Dutch refers to a source of inspiration.

In this context, DC MUZEN can be viewed as: A House of Inspiration for Direct Current Technology where art, science, engineering, sustainability, and human well-being converge.

The name is especially fitting because the project extends beyond technology itself. It explores how DC microgrids, local energy sharing, batteries, renewable energy, electric mobility, and intelligent energy management can contribute to a more sustainable, resilient, and socially balanced society. Just as the Muses inspired creativity and new ways of thinking, DC MUZEN aims to inspire researchers, policymakers, industry, installers, students, and citizens to rethink the future of energy.

DC MUZEN is a live laboratory and source of inspiration where the arts of science, engineering, and sustainability meet to demonstrate the future of energy through Direct Current technology.

An amusing detail is that the DC MUZEN demonstration house happens to be located in the street "De Muzen". This means that after all the discussions about technology, sustainability, batteries, microgrids, and innovation, the most convincing explanation for the project name might simply be: we looked out of the window and copied the street sign. 😄
